Card Briefs: MasterCard Explains Smart Cards via PC

NEW YORK - MasterCard International said it is offering an interactive computer program to teach the basics of microcomputer technology and its application to smart cards.

The computerized primer, "Getting Smart About Smart Cards," is being introduced this week at the Smart Card '95 conference in London and will be available to MasterCard members later this month.

"Smart cards have been around for more than 20 years but are only now beginning to come into the mainstream as a payments mechanism," said Robin Townend, senior vice president of chip card technology at MasterCard. The software is designed to bring members quickly up to speed and will be followed by updates, he said.
