S&P Cuts Debt, Stock Ratings on PNC

Standard & Poor's Rating Group Friday downgraded PNC Bank Corp.'s subordinated debt and preferred stock to BBB- plus from A- minus, citing the poor performance of the bank's securities portfolio.

PNC Funding Corp.'s senior debt was also downgraded to A-minus from A, subordinated debt to BBB-plus from A-minus, and commercial paper to A2 from A1.

S&P also lowered its ratings on PNC Bank Corp.'s subsidiaries ratings.

The downgrade affects about $2 billion in securities. S&P said the outlook for the debt was "stable."

The downgrade came three days after the influential investor, Warren Buffett, disclosed an 8.3% stake in PNC.
