Planners' Ranks Swell - But Not at Banks

The ranks of certified financial planners swelled by 1,700 last year, but banks accounted for very little of the increase.

The Certified Financial Planners Board of Standards said it licensed 29,532 planners in 1994, up from 27,817 in 1993.

But the Denver-based group said 1,477 of its certified planners were based at banks last year - a net gain of just three planners from 1993.

The financial planners board was set up in 1985 by the Institute for Financial Planners, a trade group, and the College of Financial Planning, an affiliated training group.

However, it operates independently, and is the nation's only licensing body for financial planners, according to spokeswoman Diana Stotler.
