Card Briefs: Verifact Signs On 5 Provincial Liquor Boards

TORONTO - International Verifact Inc. has added contracts for its point of sale payment terminals with liquor boards in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Ontario.

There were more than 2.6 million beer, liquor, and wine transactions last year in Canada, totaling approximately $98.5 million, the terminal maker said. The company said its terminals are popular with liquor stores because they offer consumer convenience and the ability to handle both debit and credit payments quickly and securely.

Canadians are accelerating their usage of debit cards. The Interac national network estimates there are more than 89,000 Canadian merchant locations accepting debit cards, a 21% market penetration. Total direct payments using debit cards exceeded $1.2 billion in the month of December.
