Card Briefs: Interbold Sells 30 ATMs For Moscow Subway

CANTON, Ohio - Interbold, the joint venture between Diebold Inc. and International Business Machines Corp., sold 30 automated teller machines to Polis Insurance Co., a Russian business that plans to install the units in the Moscow subway system.

Since the Russian infrastructure is unstable and telecommunications networks are not dependable, the Russian ATMs use smart card technology. With a smart card, all the account information resides on a computer chip on the card, eliminating the need for constant phone line use to access accounts.
