First Data Corp. has announced a management reshuffling that involves three executive vice presidents.
A. Wayne Johnson, 43, executive vice president of marketing and strategic planning in the card services group, was named president of ACB Business Services, a fast-growing collections subsidiary based in Phoenix.
Chuck Reiser, 55, moved into the newly created post of executive vice president and chief financial officer of First Data Resources, the company's core card-processing unit.
William S. Tulko, 48, formerly chief financial officer of the independent Automatic Data Processing Inc., replaced Mr. Reiser as executive vice president and chief financial officer of First Data's card services group. The group brought in most of First Data Corp.'s $1.7 billion of revenue last year.
In addition to taking charge of a collections unit with operations in 14 states, Mr. Johnson was named to the parent company's management committee. He reports to First Data Corp. executive vice president Robert Levenson, whose responsibilities include shareholder services and health systems.
Mr. Johnson joined First Data in 1992 when it acquired Qualitec, an Atlanta-based company he started that offered support services to credit providers. In the card services group, he played a key role in acquisition strategy and in increasingly aggressive advertising and promotion programs.
After the group's biggest acquisition - the recently completed $680 million deal for Card Establishment Services Inc. - First Data began promoting "merchant-bank alliances" to help banks retain retailers' card- processing accounts.
Mr. Johnson's "background is very much tailored to this industry," said a First Data spokesman. He was formerly an executive vice president of Visa U.S.A., president of First Interstate Bancard Co., and a partner in Deloitte, Haskins & Sells.
His position in the card services group, under First Data Corp. executive vice president Walter Hoff, has not been filled.
At ACB, whose clients include American Express Co. and Household International, Mr. Johnson replaces John Gaven, who will be starting an independent consulting firm.
Mr. Reiser said he made a "lateral move" to be "closer to the action" of day-to-day operations. He reports to Aldo Tesi, president of First Data Resources, and will remain at its Omaha operations hub.
A five-year employee at First Data, Mr. Reiser, said its 30% annual growth rate necessitated the creation of separate divisions to focus on the expanding credit, debit, procurement, and corporate card processing businesses.
He said, "I perform better when I'm closer to what's happening in the operations" than in a corporate staff job.
Mr. Reiser joined First Data as chief financial officer of the health systems group in Charlotte, N.C. Before that he was CFO at Cardinal Distribution, a wholesale pharmaceuticals distributor.
Mr. Tulko, who spent six years as chief financial officer at Automatic Data Processing in Chicago, reports to Mr. Hoff. He has moved to Omaha.
