Card Briefs: Visa Reports 60% Gain In Check Card Charges

SAN FRANCISCO - Visa says the dollar volume charged by its Visa Check card cardholders rose by 60% last year.

In 1994 more than 400 Visa Check card programs were launched, bringing the number of cardholders at year's end to 20.7 million, up 42.8% from the year-earlier level.

Dollar volume generated by these cardholders rose to $19.8 billion, up from $12.4 billion in 1993. Visa says its Check card volume growth has now exceeded 50% in five straight quarters.

Over the next three years, Visa projects, its Visa Check card numbers will increase to 45 million cards.
