Capitol Briefs: Calif. Thrift Is Third Failure of the Year

Regulators closed Los Angeles Thrift and Loan Co. last week, bringing the 1995 failure total to three.

All three of the this year's failures have occurred in California.

California Federal Bank, also of Los Angeles, paid $67,000 for the right to receive about $22 million in 451 deposit accounts, but will not continue to operate the failed thrift's only branch.

When Los Angeles Thrift and Loan failed, about $821,000 in 11 accounts exceeded the $100,000 deposit insurance limit. The failed institution had $24.9 million in assets.
