Monthly Charts Track Housing by Region

American Banker will be publishing a series of charts and tables that focus on regional analyses of the U.S. housing market. One chart will appear each month.

Information for the charts is being supplied by Case Shiller Weiss Inc., a Cambridge, Mass., consulting firm that specializes in housing research.

Topics will include the biggest changes in housing prices by metropolitan area; regions with the steepest and smallest losses from foreclosures; and best price performance in metro areas by upper, middle, and lower market sectors.

The first chart, right, shows that California was a major area of price weakness in the first half. Four of the five areas with the largest declines were in that state.

New Jersey regions appear among both the winners and the losers. Monmouth and Ocean, two seashore counties that have long been depressed, showed a rebound. By contrast, Bergen and Passaic counties near New York City remained weak.
