Card Briefs: Schlumberger Updates Smart Card Package

MONTROUGE, France - Schlumberger Smart Cards and Systems has released a second-generation, Windows-based software package for management of smart card projects.

The software, called WinPractis, can be used with any type of chip card, ranging from simple memory-card tokens to complex devices that work in wireless telephone equipment. The system enables a personal computer to read, write, and manage card memories and track the various phases of market deployment.

Schlumberger, one of the oldest and largest smart card suppliers, said the software will help it maintain leadership in "comprehensive smart card solutions."

The French company's smart card unit is active in both card and terminal production and recently made two acquisitions in the United States: Malco Plastics, the leading producer of credit and debit cards with magnetic stripes, and Danyl Corp., a manufacturer of automated vending equipment and card-reading systems.
