Short Takes: Northern Trust Hires Pension Services Exec

Northern Trust Corp., Chicago, announced that it has hired Steven Appell to handle large corporate retirement accounts.

Mr. Appell was named a vice president and sales manager in charge of corporate ERISA and public funds at Northern Trust Co., the $18 billion- asset banking company's lead bank.

He will be responsible for selling master trust, securities lending, investment management, and participant record keeping services to qualified retirement plan sponsors. The services will primarily be offered to corporations, not-for-profit companies, unions, and investment managers.

Mr. Appell was director of marketing from 1987 until this month for State Street Boston Corp.'s U.S. financial asset services division.

Northern Trust Co. is the fourth-largest provider of master trust and global custody services in the country. The company has $409 billion of assets under custody.
