Card Briefs: Standard Federal Gives Prepaid Calls in Promo

TROY, Mich. - Standard Federal Bank is offering a prepaid telephone card as a checking account promotion.

With each new Free Homeowner's Checking account, the customer receives a prepaid calling card with 30 minutes of free long-distance time, paid for by the $12.5 billion-asset, Michigan-based thrift.

The promotion calls attention to the fact that Standard Federal checking accounts have no per-check fees, regardless of the number of checks written, and low monthly service charges with several options for avoiding them, said chairman and president Thomas R. Ricketts.

The card is "among the first of its kind to be offered by a financial institution in our markets and the latest innovation in an ongoing effort to further enhance the bank's line of financial products and services," Mr. Ricketts said.
