PEOPLE IN THE NEWS: MasterCard Adds Muscle to Group Pushing Global

MasterCard International has hired two executives to buttress its global point of interaction group.

The division, formed just over a year ago, is charged with coordinating long-term strategy to ensure acceptance of MasterCard products in a world where the point of sale is not necessarily a retail location, but may be a computer, a telephone, a television, or an automated teller machine.

Steve Mott was named senior vice president of global ventures, reporting to Heidi Goff, who heads the group.

Jerome Mossbarger has joined the MasterCard Automated Point of Sale Program, one of four divisions within Ms. Goff's group.

As vice president of sales Mr. Mossbarger, 44, will oversee all sales and sales-support management, industry development, and implementation of sales and marketing strategies for MAPP's acquiring bank services in the electronic transaction processing market. He reports to Sharon Cline, senior vice president and general manager of MAPP.

"The global point of interaction group interacts with other MasterCard departments constantly," said Mr. Mott, 46. "Our charter is to take good business ideas, investigate, analyze, test, and implement them. We are the facilitation organization for our other areas like electronic commerce," smart cards, debit cards, and credit cards.

Before joining MasterCard, Mr. Mott had been chief executive officer of three software companies that created programs for financial services.

Previously, he was vice president of sales and marketing at MCI International and director of strategic planning for McGraw-Hill.

Mr. Mott brings a combination of marketing, sales, and strategy experience with a substantive technology and business development background, Ms. Goff pointed out.

Mr. Mott said electronic commerce will become his top priority as he begins his new job. He noted that the Purchase, N.Y.-based card association has expanded an alliance with point of sale terminal developer Verifone Inc. to include a device to place on top of television sets.

"We would like to frame a number of other alliances along those lines, for both marketing and technology thrusts," he said.

Mr. Mossbarger will assist in marketing strategies. Before joining MasterCard, Mr. Mossbarger was a sales executive for AT&T Global Information Solutions, and held several other posts at AT&T, including executive positions overseeing strategy and marketing.

"Jerry is a very results-oriented individual whose proven track record and significant sales expertise make him an extremely valuable addition to our team," said Ms. Cline.
