Short Takes: Unit Trusts Rack Up Billion-Dollar Month

Nearly $1 billion went into unit investment trusts in April, the Investment Company Institute said.

Forty-eight new tax-free bond trusts, three taxable bond trusts and nine new equity trusts issued shares totaling $948.6 million in the month, the trade association said.

Most of the new offerings - $657.1 million worth - were stock trusts. Tax-free bond trusts issued $215 million of shares.

Offerings in the first four months of 1996 totaled $6.3 billion, more than double the $3.6 billion offered in January-April 1995, the institute said.

Unit trusts hold fixed portfolios of securities until a preset maturity date.
