Card Briefs: Gulfnet Lowering Switch Fees for Cirrus, Plus

Gulfnet Inc. will reduce its switch fees for 1996. The southern electronic banking network, ranked 14th in terms of total monthly transaction volume, will lower the switch fee for Pulse transactions from 7 cents to 4.5 cents. Pulse is Gulfnet's western neighbor, with which it has a close operational and marketing alliance.

The switch fee for Cirrus and Plus transactions will be reduced from 14 cents to 6 cents. Cirrus and Plus are the national automated teller machine networks operated, respectively, by MasterCard and Visa.

The switch fees for Gulfnet transactions will stay the same.

The fee changes are expected to reduce costs to Gulfnet's members by more than $1 million.

In a related announcement, Gulfnet hired Melanie Reynolds as director of marketing and client services.

Ms. Reynolds, 25, was most recently coordinator of the international business program at Millsaps College. She was previously employed as a loan review officer at the former First Alabama Bancshares, now Regions Financial Corp.
