Starting this fall, students at Appalachian State University will be able to use their identification cards at automated teller machines and in telephones.
The university's "SuperCard" will be issued through a partnership with Southern National Corp.'s Branch Banking and Trust Co. and MCI Communications Corp. It will also be accepted at off-campus merchant locations. Transactions will be processed on-line through the Honor ATM network .
Students will get discounts and rebates on long-distance charges.
The university has issued 13,670 standard photo identification cards to faculty, students, and staff for access to campus buildings and parking lots. The cards can also be used for transactions in the university bookstore, vending machines, and the dining hall.
Kiosk Deal Enables Processor to Go National
NEW YORK - Transaction Network Plus Inc., New York, said it has a three- year contract to process MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover transactions made in virtually all North Communications Inc. kiosks.
The deal will allow Transaction Network Plus to expand from its northeastern base and go national, said Lewis Pergament, senior vice president of the company, which is owned by Diversified Investors Corp., New York.
The kiosks in stores, malls, and office buildings offer legal services and related information through self-service, multimedia terminals. Cardholders can use them to pay parking tickets, property taxes, and court- related fees and fines.
North Communications, based in Marina del Rey, Calif., sells and places the unattended kiosks primarily in the West.
