Short Takes: Met Life Money Manager Adds 2 to Portfolio Team

State Street Research and Management Co. is continuing to bulk up its portfolio management team with new talent.

The Boston-based asset management subsidiary of Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. hired John T. Wilson and J.C. Cabrera as vice presidents to manage equity funds.

Mr. Wilson, who is managing the State Street Research Investment Trust and the State Street Research Equity Investment Fund, joined the firm from another insurance company-owned money manager, Phoenix, Duff & Phelps. He managed five mutual funds and portfolios for the Hartford, Conn.-based unit of Phoenix Home Life Mutual Insurance Co.

Mr. Cabrera is working with Charles Glovsky, manager of the State Street Research Small Capitalization Growth Fund. Previously, he was a portfolio manager at First Chicago Investment Management.

As a result of the July 1 appointments, State Street's chief investment officer, Peter C. Bennett, will relinquish day-to-day management of two of the company's funds. State Street Research has $31 billion under management in 21 mutual funds.
