In Brief: Some Big Banks Opting To Provide Data via PC

Some big banks are cutting back on their usage of live telephone operators in dealing with their small business customers, according to Payment Systems Inc.

In a recent survey of the 300 largest banks, the research firm found that 16% of institutions that in 1995 offered so-called telephone information reporting through operators stopped providing it in 1996. Instead, they provide information via computer.

That matches customer preference, however. About 60% of middle-market businesses and 31% of small businesses receive their information by computer, along with a whopping 94% of large businesses.
