In Brief: Virginia's Essex Closes Sale of N.C. Branches

Essex Bancorp has completed the sale of three North Carolina branches to Centura Bank Inc., Rocky Mount, N.C.

The branches, in Raleigh, Greensboro, and Wilmington, have about $73 million of deposits.

Essex chief executive Gene D. Ross said the sale would strengthen his thrift's capital position and allow it to focus on improving its remaining branch franchise in Virginia.
