In Brief: Treasurer, 53, Retires At Banc One Corp.

After 100 quarterly earnings reports, George Meiling, treasurer and head of investor relations at Banc One Corp., has called it quits.

The 53-year-old Mr. Meiling had been with the company for about 30 years, serving as treasurer for 25. He retired at the end of July.

Mr. Meiling began as a trainee but quickly graduated to the role of treasurer.

"George played a role in almost everything this company did, including all its acquisitions," said John Russell, the head of corporate communications. "He's an extremely bright guy; we'll miss his intellect and insight."

Mr. Meiling plans to pursue other interests, which include breeding roses, something Mr. Russell said had gained him international renown.

Until the company names a successor, Michael McMennamin, its chief financial officer, will assume the treasurer's duties.

Jacqueline Spak, formerly one of Mr. Meiling's assistants, will manage investor relations until the bank hires a new person for that role.
