Card Briefs: Private Oil Card to Be First in Latin America

First Data Corp.'s card services group said it has signed a letter of intent with three companies to issue the first private-label oil card in Latin America.

The three companies - Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, a Mexican oil company; Banpais, a commercial bank; and Verifone de Mexico, a subsidiary of the U.S. point of sale terminal manufacturer, Verifone Inc. - expect to launch a pilot program in Mexico in September with First Data's Oil Services division.

When an agreement is reached, First Data would provide credit and debit card data processing, statement, and plastic issuance, and merchant and cardholder data base services.

Consumers could use the Pemex card at some 3,700 Pemex locations in Mexico.
