In Brief: Online Banking Device Uses RSA Encryption

Momentum Inc. of Boston said it is using data encryption technology from RSA Data Security Inc. of Redwood City, Calif. in its NetPad Internet access device.

The NetPad, about the size of a videocassette, is designed to make information and transaction services portable, needing only a phone line.

Momentum tested such a device two years ago with the home banking department of Chase Manhattan Bank, but not on the Internet. Momentum is using RSA's BSafe cryptography tool kits to assure the security of connections over open networks.

"Until the introduction of NetPad, access to the Internet has required a personal computer and the technical knowledge to operate it," said Richard Kosowsky, president of Momentum and inventor of the device. "Our technology delivers content in seconds and expertise in minutes, and all transactions are in a secure RSA environment."

Jim Bidzos, president of RSA, said the NetPad is another in a long list of "revolutionary" Internet technologies in which RSA has played a role.
