Smart Bits: Visa to Test Electronic Commerce in Taiwan

Visa International said it will participate in an electronic commerce trial in Taiwan, the third such test in Visa's Asia/Pacific region.

Visa previously said it would do the same in Japan and Singapore. All three will give the card association and its members an opportunity to implement the Secure Electronic Transactions protocol for credit card payments on the Internet.

The Taiwan program is scheduled to go live early next year, said James Lee, project manager adviser at the Industry Technology Research Institute. It will involve banks, merchants, and technology suppliers.

Taiwan's national emphasis on technology, with "tremendous government and industry support," make it an ideal testing ground, said Visa country manager Albert Shiung.

Elsewhere in the region, MasterCard is planning to test the SET standard in Malaysia, using the digital certificate service of GTE Corp.'s CyberTrust unit.
