Clarification: 09/23/96 issue

A page 1 story on Monday, "Holding Company Ranks Rise as Banks Shrink in Number," stated that the number of U.S. bank holding companies has grown consistently since 1990. American Banker was referring to those companies with $150 million or more in assets. At yearend 1995, there were 1,243 such companies. The total number of U.S. bank holding companies at yearend 1995 was 6,010, up from 5,997 a year earlier.
