Carreker, Data Security Firm Team Up on Bank Technology

Carreker Group and Science Applications International Corp. have agreed to jointly develop technology for the banking industry.

The companies said they will collaborate on integrated network services for voice, data, and video transmission, as well as on image-based software and services and data warehousing and data- mining products.

Many of the products will be aimed at helping banks use the Internet for retail electronic commerce, said Robert Anderson, a senior vice president at Science Applications.

The arrangement brings together an established banking industry consultant, Carreker, with a government-connected firm that is spreading its wings in the private sector.

Dallas-based Carreker specializes in check operations and float- management software. It also manages the Electronic Check Clearing House Organization and Payment Solutions Network Inc.

Science Applications International, known as SAIC, is a privately held research and technology firm based in San Diego. It is known for its data security expertise, having worked on MasterCard and Visa's Secure Electronic Transactions protocol for Internet transactions.

The alliance reflects Science Applications's plan to become more involved in the financial services sector. It initiated talks with Carreker earlier this year.

"We were incredibly flattered that they found us," said J.D. "Denny" Carreker, the company's president. "We view it as an opportunity for us."

Carreker officials said they intend to expand their offerings.
