F&M, Extending Reach in Wisconsin, Announces 3d '96 Deal

F&M Bancorp. has spent 1996 gobbling up small banks across Wisconsin.

The $1.1 billion-asset banking company on Oct. 16 announced a letter of intent to buy Prairie City Bank, Prairie du Chien. The acquisition announcement was the third of the year for Kaukauna-based F&M - all stock- swap deals. Terms were not released.

F&M is looking to build its presence in key sections of the state, a bank spokeswoman said. The $85 million-asset Prairie City is located in a commercial area on the Mississippi River in southwestern Wisconsin; the other pending acquisitions, State Bank of East Troy and Brodhead-based Green County Bank, are in southern Wisconsin.

The company acquired three Wisconsin banks last year, said Linda K. Seefeldt, vice president of marketing.

"We look for communities that are strong," she said.
