Tech Bytes: Financial Modeling Added to PC Service

Salem Five Cents Savings Bank has enhanced its proprietary home banking program, allowing customers to do various kinds of financial modeling in addition to simply paying bills via their personal computers.

Salem Five plans to add the same capability to its Internet site in January. The community bank was one of the first in the country to post a Web site, in March 1995. Last summer, it became one of the first banks to open its site to banking transactions.

Salem Five officials say nearly 500,000 people have visited their Web site.

Salem Five also named Linda Gustafson, until recently the manager of a branch in Danvers, Mass., "virtual branch manager." Her job will be to coordinate services for the growing number of customers who conduct their banking business on-line.
