Short Takes: Phoenix Duff Hires Small-Cap Stratgist

The mutual fund company Phoenix Duff & Phelps has appointed a research analyst to help portfolio managers find small-company stocks.

Cinda C. Hughes will work with a team of analysts developing investment themes of rapidly growing companies. She will report to Bill Newman, chief investment strategist for the Hartford-based fund company.

Ms. Hughes was an associate strategist at PaineWebber Inc. She also worked at Kidder Peabody.

She cut her teeth in the money management business as an analyst for Fidelity Investments, Boston. She is a Rhodes College graduate with a BA in economics.

Phoenix, which is beefing up its equity research group, manages $34.1 billion in assets. The company sells annuities and mutual funds to banks through a contractual arrangement with a third-party marketing firm, Planco, in Paoli, Pa.
