Smart Bits: Postal Service, Amex Launch Phone Card

The U.S. Postal Service and American Express Co. have rolled out the First Class PhoneCard, a prepaid calling card that has been in pilot phase in several U.S. markets since late 1995.

The cobranded phone card, bearing collectible stamp art, is now available in most post offices nationwide.

The card, which can be replenished with value with any major credit card, is replaceable if lost or stolen.

"We are excited by the success of the First Class PhoneCard test and are looking forward to a continued alliance with the U.S. Postal Service," said Carl Lehmann, president of American Express Stored Value Group.
