Capital Briefs: Rep Hyde Shuns Deal Settling S&L Lawsuit

Former officers and directors at the now-defunct Clyde Federal Savings Association agreed Tuesday to pay $850,000 to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. to settle charges that they contributed to the institution's failure.

The defendants include Rep. Henry Hyde, R-Ill., who said Tuesday, "I have not agreed to nor will I agree to make any payment in settlement of this case."

Clyde Federal, a $529 million-asset thrift in North Riverside, Ill., failed in February 1990, costing taxpayers $67 million. The Resolution Trust Corp. filed a professional liability suit in April 1993 in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. A judge is expected to approve the settlement within a month.
