Card Frontiers: Verifone Wins Deal For Israel Card System

Point of sale terminal maker Verifone Inc. and its reseller Caspit Ltd. won a contract to provide a smart identification card system for Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

The companies will provide hardware and software for the program. Nearly 30,000 students, faculty, and staff members are expected to carry cards with embedded computer chips that are made by Gemplus.

The Unicard will give students access to buildings, library checkout, an electronic purse, health facilities, and the Internet.

Students will also be able to store their grades, academic status, tuition fees, and other personal information on the cards.
