In Breif: FHA Lending Jumped 76% in 2d Quarter

Lending volume in the FHA program increased substantially in the second quarter, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development's most recent survey, released in late November.

FHA-insured loan originations were up 76% from the year-earlier level to $18.4 billion. The FHA's share of total home loan originations was 8.4%, compared with 7.5%.

Surveying overall home lending, including non-FHA loans, HUD found a 56% rise in originations for one-family to four-family homes, to $219.9 billion. Volume was up 60%, to $128.4 billion, at mortgage companies; 57%, to $35.1 billion, at savings and loans; and 45%, to $45.9 billion, at commercial banks.
