President of Texas' Cullen/Frost Bankers Retiring in May

Cullen/Frost Bankers, San Antonio, said its president, Robert S. McClane, will retire in May.

No successor has been chosen, the $4.5 billion-asset banking company said. Mr. McClane, 57, an employee for 34 years, is expected to remain a director.

Mr. McClane "has been my right arm for many years and has been an integral part of the Cullen/Frost team," said senior chairman Thomas C. Frost. "We respect (his) decision."

Richard Evans will remain chairman and chief operating officer of Cullen/Frost and chairman of its lead subsidiary, Frost National Bank. Patrick Frost will remain president of Frost National.

Mr. McClane graduated from Trinity University, San Antonio, in 1961 and joined Frost National the following year. He rose through the senior ranks quickly, becoming vice president in 1968 and senior vice president in 1973. He was named president of the holding company in 1985.

He helped lead Cullen/Frost through a series of branch and bank acquisitions, starting in the 1980s. Most recently the company agreed to acquire $207 million-asset Corpus Christi Bancshares for $33 million in stock; that deal is expected to close in the first quarter.
