Executive Changes

Huntington Bancshares, Columbus, Ohio, has elected Peter E. Geier and Ronald J. Seiffert as vice chairmen and has given them wide responsibilities in anticipation of consolidation of banking activities in July, when interstate banking become effective.

Mr. Geier, 39, will be responsible for all operations of banking units. Mr. Seiffert, also 39, will be responsible for all product management activities.

Both report to Frank Wobst, chairman and chief executive.

Mr. Geier will also assume the newly created titles of president and chief operating officer of Huntington National Bank, the lead subsidiary. Mr. Seiffert will be a vice chairman of the bank. Mr. Wobst remains its chief executive.

Mr. Geier had been executive vice president of consumer services at the holding company. Mr. Seiffert was executive vice president in commercial services.

MIDDLE ATLANTIC

Sovereign Bancorp, Wyomissing, Pa., has named Lawrence M. Thompson Jr. chief operating officer of Sovereign Bank, its lead operating subsidiary.

Mr. Thompson will remain chief operating officer and corporate secretary of the holding company. He has been given responsibility for retail banking, branch operations, and lending, which were formerly overseen by Jay S. Sidhu, Sovereign's president and chief executive.

Mr. Thompson, who joined the company in 1984, is a director of Sovereign Community Bank and president of the Sovereign Bank Foundation.

Sovereign has $9.4 billion of assets and 122 bank offices in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey.

SOUTHEAST

Wachovia Bank of North Carolina, the Winston-Salem unit of Wachovia Corp., has promoted two executive officers.

Michael J. Tierney, senior vice president and group executive, was named executive vice president. He will remain chief investment officer for Wachovia Asset Management, a unit of the bank's financial management division.

Anne J. Doss, senior vice president, has added the title of group executive. She is support services manager in Wachovia Corp.'s personal financial services group.

In addition, Wachovia Bank of North Carolina promoted three vice presidents to senior vice president. They are:

*Cindy R. Libhardt, the branch delivery channel manager in its consumer financial services group.

*Charles R. Miller, senior accounting manager in its control group.

*Keith M. Wilson, Wachovia Corp.'s manager of compensation and benefits.

Also, Wachovia Operational Services Corp. promoted vice presidents Ted A. Hubbard and Milton E. Peddycord to senior vice president. Both are applications group managers, Mr. Hubbard of the information services group and Mr. Peddycord of the systems development group.

Finally, Wachovia Corporate Services Inc. promoted vice presidents Charlene A. Johnson and Linda C. Thompson to senior vice president. Ms. Johnson is the Southeast corporate loan administration officer; Ms. Thompson is manager of private-label services.

WEST

Brant City National Bank, Beverly Hills, has hired Robert H. Brant as executive vice president of commercial banking for downtown Los Angeles and for Orange and San Diego counties.

Mr. Brant, who was also named to the executive committee, is responsible for expanding City National's business presence in those areas.

He was senior vice president of commercial banking at Union Bank of California, specializing in middle-market lending. His responsibilities were in Orange County, the Inland Empire, and some sectors of Los Angeles.

City National Bank is the principal subsidiary of $3.9 billion-asset City National Corp.
