Card Briefs: Schlumberger Offers A Public-Key Card

Schlumberger, the French smart card manufacturer, introduced Cryptoflex, a smart card with RSA-based public key cryptography. With a 1,024-bit key, the card will enable high-security transactions on the Internet and other open networks.

The cards contain a Motorola high-performance chip.

The Cryptoflex card is designed to be part of network security products being developed by members of the PC/SC work group led by Microsoft Corp. The group is developing standards for integrating smart cards with personal computers.

Gemplus, a competing card maker, introduced a similar product, the Gemplus Public Key card.
