Capital Briefs: Thrift Fund Fix Heads Roukema's Agenda

Rep. Marge Roukema, R-N.J., chairwoman of the House Banking Committee's financial institutions subcommittee, has a long job list for her panel.

Topping her agenda: the thrift insurance fund rescue. If the fix fails to pass as a part of budget legislation, Rep. Roukema said, she would push Senate Banking Committee Chairman Alfonse M. D'Amato, R-N.Y., to make good his pledge to take up her thrift fund bill, which also would merge the bank and thrift charters.

Reintroducing regulatory relief legislation also is a priority if the combined Glass-Steagall repeal/regulatory relief bill fails. Rep. Roukema's agenda also includes consolidation of bank regulatory agencies, oversight hearings on the credit union industry, and review of new Community Reinvestment Act rules.
