Card Briefs: Nova Joins AT&T for Wireless Verification

Nova Information Systems Inc. has teamed up with the wireless data division of AT&T Wireless Services to develop a system whereby merchants can verify credit cards in unwired locations like stadiums and parking garages.

Using a wireless data transmission technology called Cellular Digital Packet Data, AT&T and Nova will give businesses the ability to handle credit card transactions from virtually any location in less than six seconds. The companies said it would cost merchants just pennies per transaction.

Nova Information Systems processes more than $12 billion of annual credit card transactions and has alliances with more than 200 banks nationwide, including First Union Corp.
