Senior Editor In Washington Hired by FDIC

Robert M. Garsson, American Banker's senior editor in Washington, is resigning to become director of corporate communications at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

Mr. Garsson, who begins work at the FDIC Feb. 20, will be the agency's chief spokesman, replacing Alan J. Whitney, who retired last month after 16 years.

"Bob Garsson is widely respected in the financial community, in government circles, and in the news media," said FDIC Chairman Ricki Helfer. "He combines integrity, credibility, enthusiasm, and communications skills with an insider's knowledge of banking and public policy."

Mr. Garsson, 44, was named a senior editor last July after being the newspaper's Washington bureau chief and its congressional correspondent. Before moving to Washington in 1987, Mr. Garsson had spent five years as a reporter in the paper's New York headquarters.
