Cards Briefs: Volume Up 17% in '95, MAC's Owner Reports

Electronic Payment Services Inc. announced its volume grew 17% last year to 1.6 billion switch transactions.

The company owns the MAC automated teller machine network and the Buypass point of sale processing concern.

Electronic Payment Services also brought 4,000 ATMs into the MAC network in 1995, bringing its total to more than 10,000 - which represents one out of every 12 ATMs installed in the United States.

MAC network participation grew to 19,400 ATMs in 1995.

Membership in the MAC network grew by 228 financial institutions in 1995, bringing the total network membership to 1,800 in 40 states.

Separately, Star System Inc. certified Electronic Payment Services Inc. as a processor on the Star switch, providing the Delaware-based company with direct access to the Star automated teller machine and Explore point of sale networks. Financial institutions with membership in the Star network will be allowed to designate Electronic Payment Services as a processor.

Star System, based in San Diego, is the nation's largest regional electronic banking network in terms of transaction volume.
