In Brief: Office Construction Up In Suburban Markets

New office construction has returned to suburban markets across the country, Cushman & Wakefield reports.

The international brokerage firm said 8.5 million square feet of new office space opened in the nation's suburbs in 1995, including 4.4 million square feet of speculative space.

Cushman noted that - in contrast to the boom years, when entire projects were built on speculation - 64% of the space that was not built for a specific tenant was preleased.

In downtown markets, Cushman noted a lack of construction, but said occupancy of existing space improved.
