Barnett's Still Waiting to Go On-Air with Home Banking Pilot

Barnett Banks Inc. is experiencing new delays in delivering banking services via interactive television.

The bank, based in Jacksonville, Fla., expected last year to deliver television-based home banking in conjunction with an interactive cable television test conducted by Time Warner Cable Inc.

Time Warner's Full-Service Network has been running since December to 4,000 homes in Maitland, Fla., with 50 content providers involved - but not Barnett. The network features such offerings as movies on demand, interactive games, and on-line shopping.

According to Paul Lambert, Barnett's director of interactive service, the bank's service is ready and awaits only a green light from Time Warner.

"We have the application and it's developed and we're just waiting to deploy it," he said.

Tammy Lindsay, a vice president for communications for the Full Service Network, said the banking service is not stalled, adding that Time Warner had not formally announced Barnett's participation in the network until November.

"This is an evolving process," she said. "This was never intended to be a 'flash, cut.'"

Time Warner offered no specific timetable for bringing the banking service on-line.
