Card Briefs: MasterCard Contest To Promote Card Use

MasterCard International will launch an automated teller machine-point of sale sweepstakes this summer in the United States and Canada.

The program is being sponsored by the card association's MasterMoney, Maestro, and Cirrus business units.

The Express Lane Sweepstakes, in which customers and employees of participating institutions get a chance to win one of more than 250 prizes, including five Chrysler Sebring convertibles, is intended to increase consumers' awareness and usage of debit and ATM cards for shopping and banking.

MasterCard said members could use the sweepstakes to motivate inactive cardholders to use their cards and to promote POS debit use to consumers who generally use their cards only for ATM withdrawals. MasterCard will provide statement stuffers to reach cardholders.

Members must enroll in the sweepstakes by April 12 to participate. Then every time a customer or employee uses a MasterCard debit card between July 1 and Sept. 15 to pay a merchant or withdraw cash from a Cirrus ATM, the cardholder is automatically entered in the sweepstakes. Winners will be chosen in a random drawing Sept. 25.

The grand prize is a car and $50,000 in cash. Other prizes include $100 in cash.

Employees must correctly answer four questions concerning the enhanced ATM card to qualify for a separate drawing Aug. 15.
