Tech Type: Internet Links Added To Software Product

S2 Systems Inc. has updated one of its networking products to work on the Internet.

The specialty software unit of Stratus Computer Inc., has modified its program to act as a gateway between the Internet and standard mainframe systems, such as those running at most major banks.

Two large insurance companies have already signed on to use the software, according to Hank DuPre, the director of product marketing for S2 Systems.

The product, dubbed NetX Window, is a modified version of the company's previous "electronic window" software, which is commonly used to link the personal computers or servers at corporate customers to their banks' mainframes. The original software has been available since 1988.

NetX Window uses encryption technology created by RSA Data Security Inc. and is protected by a secure sockets layer.

Mr. DuPre said the software is likely to be used initially on internal networks - on so-called intranets.

But the popularity and openness of the Internet make it an attractive pipeline for banks looking to link to corporate as well as retail customers. And the software is appropriate for use on the global network as well.
