Tech Bytes: Parallel Processing Sales Surged in '95, IBM Says

International Business Machines Corp. announced that it experienced a surge in sales of its parallel processing servers last year.

Parallel processing systems are tightly woven clusters of multiprocessors that work together on complex computing tasks. Banks have embraced the systems in recent years to help them mine their wealth of customer data.

Big Blue said it had shipped more than 250,000 of its S/390 servers, a centerpiece of its parallel processing technology line. This exceeds 1994 sales numbers by 60%.

"Customer acceptance of our CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) and Parallel Sysplex technologies is undeniable and growing," said Linda Sanford, the general manager of IBM's system/390 division.
