Card Briefs: Verifone Introduces Debit Card Terminal

Verifone Inc. has introduced a high-security version of its personal identification number keypad for point of sale terminals.

The compact Pinpad 2000, designed especially for use with debit cards, is compatible with, and priced similarly to, the Pinpad 201 and 301. Future upgrades become relatively simple, Verifone said, because the new product can simultaneously support two encryption methods - known as Master/Session and DUKPT, or Derived Unique Key Per Transaction.

Verifone, which has shipped 650,000 Pinpads worldwide, wants to offer "the most seamless migration path to higher levels of security and performance," said C. Lloyd Mahaffey, vice president of marketing. "This is increasingly important as on-line debit becomes more widely used, and as our industry embraces emerging payment technologies such as chip cards."
