Card Briefs: Spaniard Hired to Oversee Europay Regional Offices

Europay International has named veteran Spanish banker Javier Perez to the newly created position of senior business manager.

Mr. Perez will oversee the company's regional offices and ensure they coordinate their activities with headquarters.

The appointment reflects Europay's desire to maximize the benefits from its "local presence" throughout the region, said Francis van den Bosch, director of commercial affairs at the association, which is partially owned by MasterCard International.

Mr. Perez, 43, began his banking career in the 1970s at Banco de Vizcaya, which eventually became Banco Bilbao Vizcaya. In 1990, after a short stint as head of retail banking at 400-branch Banca Catalana, he became general manager for business development with Visa's regional corporation for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Since 1991 Mr. Perez had been head of commercial banking for Argentaria, the biggest banking group in Spain.
