Card Briefs: Mondex to Test Student-ID, Cash Card

Mondex, the smart-card company owned by National Westminster Bank of London, in October will pilot a multipurpose card for universities.

The Natwest University Card will incorporate a Mondex electronic purse application for cashless purchases. It will mark the first time that Mondex will be available in the United Kingdom outside Swindon, where a pilot of the technology has been in progress since last summer.

The card will be available to more than 10,000 staff members and students at the University of Exeter, in southwest England.

The card will be used as a library card, building access card, and voting card for student elections, as well as for discounts on and off campus.

The card can be used at restaurants, bars, shops, vending machines, photocopiers, pay laundries, and pay phones that have been upgraded to process chip transactions.
