Introducing ... A Monthly Survey of Bank Merger Activity

American Banker today inaugurates a regular survey of merger and acquisition activity in the banking industry.

The M&A Review debuts with an eight-page section looking back at the expansion activity among banks and thrifts during the first quarter.

Beginning on May 14, the M&A Review will appear monthly, offering thorough and timely coverage on the mergers and acquisitions reshaping the industry, starting with activity in April.

While the merger scene was quieter during the winter, there were still several important deals, and most observers say they expect the pace to increase as the year goes on.

In today's section, tables provide rankings and information on the 25 largest transactions announced during the quarter and the investment advisers who helped put the deals together. Deals that were finalized during the period also are listed.

Articles furnish perspective and context on the news and trends in mergers. Today, James J. McDermott Jr., president of Keefe, Bruyette & Woods Inc., a veteran watcher of banks, offers his perspective on the industry's future.

On July 29, American Banker will publish its comprehensive Midyear Review of deals, tracing the scope of banks' continuing evolution within the fast-changing financial services sector of the economy.
