Card Brief: NationsBank to Issue Cards for U. of Texas

NationsBank Corp. said it will issue a student identification card that has automated teller machine functions to students at the University of Texas at Austin.

The university cards, which will be equipped with a magnetic stripe, can be used for dormitory access, recreational sports facility access, library circulation functions, and a host of other campus services. The card may also be activated for use as an ATM card that can be used free of charge at nine new university campus ATMs or any NationsBank ATM nationwide.

"NationsBank made the best offer in response to the university's request for proposals and will offer a wide range of excellent services to the university community of 48,000 students and 20,000 faculty and staff members," said Charles Franklin, University vice president for business affairs.

Parents can make deposits for students at any NationsBank banking center in Texas.

The nine ATMs will be operational on-campus by July 8. A NationsBank Longhorn banking center will provide an additional full-service ATM. Staff will be available to open new accounts.

Distribution of the identification cards will begin June 1 during student orientation. Beginning August 1, the card can be activated for use as an ATM card by opening a NationsBank account.
