Capital Briefs: Bankruptcy-Law Panel to Probe Recent Surge

The National Bankruptcy Review Commission will investigate the recent jump in personal bankruptcy filings.

The commission, which is to report to Congress next year on proposed changes to the bankruptcy laws, said it wants to discover the effect on the economy of the record-breaking number of filings.

Many financial experts expect personal bankruptcy filings to exceed one million this year. Bankers have said they are worried that the rise in personal bankruptcies may be foreshadowing higher default and delinquency rates on consumer and mortgage loans.
